Welcome to the beautiful natural world of Winteringham.

Winteringham Nature Site - Bat

The bat - a most remarkable creature in many ways! The only flying mammal, navigating and catching its prey by sound. It is extremely difficult to catch more than a fleeting glimpse of these nocturnal animals - which makes this photo taken in School Road by Ken Jacobs all the more remarkable!

Winteringham Nature Site - SpeedwellTaken on the bank of Hewde Lane, this photograph shows germander speedwell, sometimes called cat’s eye or veronica chamaedris.

It likes sloping grassy banks ... just like its habitat on Hewde Lane

Winteringham Nature Site - Toad

As adventurous as the original Toad of Toad Hall in Kenneth Grahame’s “Wind in the Willows” - though perhaps not by stealing cars or capsizing on the river - this toad in West End is the gardener’s friend.  His diet of slugs and grubs helps control the pests in the most natural way possible.

Often out during the hours of darkness, this hedgehog though was caught on a daylight mission by Keith, as he tended to a neighbour’s garden.

Winteringham Nature Site - House martins

Mid-July, and Harry captured this image on South Side as a house martin feeds its young.

Winteringham Nature Site - Soapwort

Soapwort or saponaria officianalis which flowers in June and early August. It is in our garden. Substances contained in the root foams in water to make a cleaning agent that used to be employed in country areas. The museum service still uses this to clean old and delicate fabrics.

Bee

This hard-working bee was spotted on a dahlia in School Road towards the end of July.
